A quick update to my previous post about Mr. Moles. After 3 days in the ICU of our local animal hospital, we finally received a diagnosis that led to some good news. Which, to make a long story short, he’s got a long road ahead but he’s going to be okay!

From this:

To this. “Patchwork” like, but alive and getting stronger.

After several joint taps, (similar to a spinal tap but in all his joints — hip, elbows, knees) they were able to isolate the problem to his left front and back leg. The back leg was the limb he had surgery on in the fall that subsequently became infected. We thought it had healed, but the pins in his knee were (and are) most likely harboring bacteria that actually spread to his front leg. He has been started on a course of IV antibiotics and pain control, switching to the oral route earlier today, after we brought him home. He will need to have the pins removed and his knee flushed sometime in the next month to ensure all the bacteria is gone.

So, I need to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone who wished him well, thought about him (and us), prayed for Moles, and otherwise offered support. I have not had time to respond to comments yet, but please be assured it really did help us feel less alone in dealing with such a serious situation. Thanks again!

I also would like to thank everyone at the Cranberry Hill Animal Hospital. The entire team, lead by vet Dr. Kelly Ferguson, could not have been better. Mr. Moles owes them his life!
