Happy New Year everyone. I and my co editor, Heather Nann, would like to take this opportunity to offer a sincere and heartfelt thank you to our immensely talented pool of writers, as of today over fifty in number. You have helped take CG from an obscure publication with seventeen subscribers to one of Mediums most progressive and eclectic publications with subscriptions in excess of 2.7 K. It’s been a good year!

We’d also like to offer a special thank our subscribers and readers for your engagement with our stories and the support you have shown to CG and to your favourite writers.

THE JANUARY SITUATION

We have a few things to update you on, the first being a comment on the Justin Forest controversy of early January. We appreciate the concern this event has caused, though there comes a point when the best option to move forward is to place a period on the issue. That is what we have done. A detailed narrative of all relevant information is offered in this CG post, and provides context, details, and lessons learned from the incident.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

In publication news, Crossing Genres has made a slight modification to our submission guidelines regarding what we publish. As of today, we are no longer accepting regular length fictional short stories. We made this decision to better focus our efforts on the writing we enjoy the most and showcase the best. For those who write short fiction, may we strongly suggest that you send your submissions to the place that specializes in fiction; Made Up Words.

MADE UP WORDS

Is a new, fiction only publication that brings you the best quality short stories on Medium three times a week, carefully selected by a stellar editorial team, Editors of Made Up Words. Please note that CG will still be accepting flash fiction, serial fiction, and poetic fiction submissions, just not regular short story submissions. You may ask how we are defining flash fiction? Easy. 1000 words or less constitutes flash fiction at CG.

MONETIZATION FOR WRITERS

CG is pleased to be taking part in a new monetization study for writers, currently being co-ordinated by Todd Hannula. What does this mean? On certain random CG articles, links will appear at the bottom of the page asking readers if they would be willing to support an author financially. We are NOT asking you to do that, simply soliciting your opinion and ideas around the willingness to.

As Todd explains in this article and below.

To test reader’s responses to paying for writing right here on Medium, we want you to join our little experiment:

We will be running this experiment for 90 days.

We will be collecting click through data (how many people click on each type of payment)

We will be collecting survey data (hopefully people will take an extra 30 seconds to share some feedback).

We are housing all of our data in the publication: Show Me the Money. This allows us to communicate test updates with those interested in either watching or joining the test — without asking for your personal details. It also allows us a space to share all the data publicly.

If any CG authors do not want to take part in this study and do not want the links placed on their work, you need to let us know in writing before we publish your next piece.

A TEASER

Lastly, though we can’t give a lot of details at present, in the next month or two, look for CG to be taking part in a Medium wide theme event with special postings, articles, and forums on a very timely topic.

Until next time.
